Metal V.S Emo

Recent accusations put punk-derived emo music in the crosshairs of ill-favored comparisons with 1980s hair metal.

Predictably, emo kids everywhere are depressed, some about the unfavorable associations with Motley Crue, but mostly just because they're emo kids.

Proponents of this theory cite the aesthetically-driven popularity of the two genres and their allegedly exclusive appeal to teenage girls. They discount predecessors and pioneers of the genre like The Juliana Theory, Jimmy Eat World and Saves the Day as genuine and level their axes at recent successes Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance and Cute is What We Aim For.

Parallels can be drawn between the current media darlings of emo music and the late 80s success of bands like Trixter and Winger, whereas something authentic has been duplicated so many times that its become a process or formula.

While initial bands like those already mentioned, (solo-era) Dashboard Confessional and Death Cab for Cutie garner credit for being innovative, Good Charlotte and Simple Plan are seen as record label-bred imitations of a time-tested and proven monetary success.

Combine one part (arguably) handsome lead singer (preferably with a distinct hairstyle), one part enigmatic, soft-spoken guitarist, a revolving array of ill-tempered bass players and an unpredictable, uncontrollable but ultimately lovable drummer and wait for pop success.

*Rhythm guitarists are optional.

As a self-proclaimed emo kid, it pains me to read such charges against a beloved genre. And it damn near kills me to admit they're (probably) true.

While it will result in almost definite excommunication from emo crowds and being shunned from all open mic nights, one would be hard-pressed to find a better candidate to dissect the claims against the music style than a lover of the same style.

Most embracers of the punk-derived style fear these comparisons because they misunderstand them. People assume that being compared to a lover of metal automatically means that you're going to have twelve illegitimate children, be employed as a high school janitor at your alma mater and bite the heads off flying mammals.

supermassive blackhole

this is the lyrics of supermassive blackhole by muse:

Ooh, baby, don't you know I suffer?
Ooh, baby, can you hear me mourn?
You caught me under false pretences
How long before you let me go?

Ooh ooh ahh, you set my soul alight
Ooh ooh ahh, you set my soul alight

Glaciers melting in the dead of night
And the superstar sucked into the supermasssive (Ooh ooh ahh, you set my soul alight)
Glaciers melting in the dead of night
And the superstar sucked in so...(Ooh ooh ahh, you set my soul...)

I thought I was a fool for no one
But ooh, baby, I'm a fool for you
You're the queen of the superficial
But how long before you tell the truth?

Ooh ooh ahh, you set my soul alight
Ooh ooh ahh, you set my soul alight

Glaciers melting in the dead of night
And the superstar sucked into the supermasssive (Ooh ooh ahh, you set my soul alight)
Glaciers melting in the dead of night
And the superstar sucked in so...(Ooh ooh ahh, you set my soul...)

Supermassive black hole

First time I heard this song, I wasn't so sure...but now after a few listens it's one of the catchiest songs I've heard, I find myself humming and singing it constantly. Can't wait for the new album.
When bands try new things it can often end in tears but I have complete faith in Muse, they are one of the few bands that in recent years that i actually love rather than just like. Hopefully this new sound will attract new audiences.

Initially I wasn't so sure I liked it, but it has definitely grown on me. I think the band knows what they are doing. The song is really funky and incredibly catchy. So what if it's not 'typical muse'? If bands were always the same, why would anyone bother listening to their new stuff?

black holes and revelations is a fantastic alb, highly recommend u get a copy when it's out...yes, supermassive is danc-y,but rest of album quite diff, you can tell they've been listening to queen and pick out spanish influences too.agree with most here - extremely talented band (considering lead singer/guitarst is a concert pianist), does not put in fillers but truly has attention to detail for each song...brilliant. favourite so far is "hoodoo"...still would say absolution is their best work.
